He impressed a number of bigger clubs and   Southampton brought him to the Premiership in May of 1997 for £750,000 where he quickly got off the mark with nine goals in 20 games in his first season

Alltogether Davies scored 12 goals in 30 appearances during his first spell at Southampton

He was then  sold to Blackburn who signed him for £7.5 million in June 1998, but he failed to ignite as he was plagued by a number of injuries he managed only two goals in 29 appearances

Then Davies went back to Southampton in August 1999 in a swap deal that took Egil Ostenstad and £1.2 million to Blackburn.

He failed to recaptured the form that made him such a promising talent during his first spell with the Saints
By the start of the 2002/03 season at Southampton he had netted just 11 goals in 82 games.
Unable to get first team action, he was loaned out to First Division side Millwall in September 2002 initially for a month to gain a short spell of regular first team football
He returned to the Dell in November 2002
