Jan 29 2003: Gillingham have extended midfielder
Mark Saunders contract, it now runs until the summer of 2005
Jan 29 2003: The Chicago Fire has elected not to
pick up the 2003 option of midfielder and senior
international Sergi Daniv. In his two seasons with Chicago,
Daniv appeared in 22 games and scored three goals and three
assists.
Jan 28 2003: Stirling Albion have signed Anton
Nugent to take over from departed keeper Ian
Turner
Jan 28 2003: Farnborough Town manager (and acting
chairman) Graham Westley has reportedly quit the club.
Jan 28 2003: Barnsley caretaker boss, Glyn Hodges,
has been appointed manager - at least until the end of the
season.
Jan 28 2003: Villa have agreed a new one year deal
with 34 year old defender Steve Staunton
Jan 28 2003: Middlesbrough have reportedly
completed the signing of Derby County duo, Chris Riggott and
Malcolm
Christie
Riggott is a highly rated central
defender who has interested just about every club in the
Premiership, but until now the price tag has scared off all
clubs.
Christie
is a pacy striker who has also been attracting interest from
other Premier League clubs. The question with both these
players was always when would they go rather than if.
Jan 28 2003: Swansea City have bought Roberto
Martinez from Walsall. The 29 year old Spanish midfielder
has come in on a free until the end of the season - with
provision for him to go back to the Saddlers if things don't
work out at Swansea.
The Swans have also offered 3rd
year scholar Stuart Jones his first professional contract.
The 18 year old defender is being offered a one year deal.
Their other 3 third year scholars,
goalkeeper Simon Cole, utility player John Eames and
defender Geraint Frowen, have been told that they will not
be offered a professional contract and are free to find
themselves a new club.
Also being released are 2 of their
summer signings, defender David Theobald and midfielder
David Moss.
Jan 28 2003: John Toshack has quit as manager of
Serie B side Catania after he fell out with the chairman.
Jan 28 2003: Feyenoord have signed Chilean
midfielder, Jorge Acuna from Universidad Catolica for 1m
Euros following a successful trial period.
Jan 28 2003: D.C. United announced today that
defender Galin Ivanov has signed a contract with Major
League Soccer and will be allocated to the club. D.C. United
used its sole remaining player allocation, acquired in
December's blockbuster trade with the MetroStars, to gain
the services of the Bulgarian international. Jan 28
2003: Charlton manager Alan Curbishley has confirmed he
is 'delighted' to have captured former Southampton defender
Tahar El-Khalej on a short-term contract. The Moroccan
international was released by the Saints at the end of last
week.
Jan 27 2003: A new player for VfL Wolfsburg has
been official signed today: Peter Madsen, a forward from Bröndby
in Copenhagen signed until June, 30th 2003 with an option to
lengthen this contract. The 24 year old Danish Dynamite had
been one of the best scorers in Danish Superleague last
season with 22 goals.
Jan 27 2003: Barcelona have sacked Louis van Gaal.
The Dutch coach will stay in control of team affairs until a
compensation package can be agreed. He leaves with the team
in 12th in La Liga and through to the second group stage of
the Champions League.
Jan 27 2003: Newcastle United have sent Diego
Gavilan out on loan to Sporting Club Internacional (Brazil)
until December, though the Toon have reserved the right to
sell him when the transfer window re-opens in the summer.
Jan 27 2003: Marconi Stallions have re-signed 19
year old striking sensation Alex Brosque until the end of
2004.
Jan 27 2003: NY/NJ Metrostars sign all-star
goalkeeper Tim Howard to a multi year deal. The
inspirational keeper has overcome being born with Tourette's
Syndrome to gain 3 caps for the US and is active in raising
awareness of the condition. Jan 27 2003: San Jose
Earthquakes lose 2 players before the start of the 2003 MSL
season. Defender Wade Barrett has joined Danish Superleague
side AGF Arhus on a 2 and a half year deal, while keeper Joe
Cannon has joined French side Racing Club de Lens on a 6
month deal with an option for a longer deal.
Jan 27 2003: New England Revolution's top scorer
has renegotiated his contract with the MSL (which holds all
the player's contracts in the MSL), keeping the 22 year old
striker at the Revs for 2003.
Jan 27 2003: Dundee United have signed 2
defenders, Andy Tod on loan and Gary Bollan in a permanent
deal from Livingston.
Tod comes in because his club, Bradford
City, can't afford to pay Dunfermline Athletic the £25,000
they would owe them if he made one more appearance for the
Bantams first team.
Jan 27 2003: West Ham have taken a defender on
trial after yesterday's FA Cup humiliation. The player in
question is 32 year old Greek international, Leonidas
Vokolos, who has fallen out with his present club
Panathanaikos.
Jan 27 2003: The Football Association of Ireland
have finally confirmed Brian Kerr as the new manager of the
Republic of Ireland national side. Kerr has been in charge
of Ireland's youth teams for the last 6 years and has been
very successful.
He first got involved with the Irish
national team back in 1983 when he assisted Liam Tuohy, who
was then in charge of the youth teams. He has also won the
League of Ireland Premier Division twice as a manager.
Jan 27 2003: Southport manager Phil Wilson has
left the Conference side by 'mutual consent'
Jan 27 2003: Southampton midfielder, Matt Oakley,
has signed a 2 year contract extension, tying him to the
club until June 2006.
Jan 27 2003: Everton have taken 2 young Falkirk
forwards on trial.
Lee Miller is a 19 year old who has come
through the youth ranks at Falkirk, he spent time in the
summer on trial at Forest and is expected to be a star in
the future.
Colin Samuel is a 21 year old Trinidad
and Tobago international with pace to burn and a fiercesome
shot. Remember the name because this lad will be a star - he
scored a hat-trick at the weekend for Falkirk and it won't
be his last. Falkirk would have signed him much sooner if
they could have got a work permit for him.
Jan 27 2003: Tottenham manager, Glenn Hoddle, has
informed German midfielder, Steffen Freund, that his
contract will not be renewed when it expires in the summer.
Jan 27 2003: Rushden and Diamonds have taken Abdou
Sall on trial. The Senegalese defender is surplus to
requirements at Kidderminster.
Jan 27 2003: Nottingham Forest have signed
Benjamin Gavanon on loan for the rest of the season, after
the 22 year old impressed Paul Hart in two loan spells. His
club, Olympique Marseille, would like to keep him but want
him to get some first team experience.
Jan 27 2003: Rangers sign French left back Jerome
Bonnissel until the end of the season, the 29 year old was
available for free.
Jan 27 2003: Paul Gascoigne has signed for Chinese
2nd Division side, Gansu Tianma, on 1 year deal. His duties
will involve being a coaching assistant and a consultant to
the club's youth academy as well as playing. The
ex-Newcastle, Spurs, Lazio, Rangers and Everton midfielder
has been looking for a club all season but has failed to
gain a deal anywhere until now.
Jan 27 2003: Livingston have signed 35 year old
Spanish international Guillermo Amor. The 37 cap star has
been without a club this season and has been training with
Livi prior to signing. The deal is for the rest of the
season for the European Cup and Cup Winners Cup winner,
though this may be extended.
Jan 26 2003: Cerro Porteno defender, Dario
Caballero, has signed for Lokomotiv Moscow for one season.
Jan 26 2003: Reports credited to his agent say
that Stanislav Varga has been released from Sunderland after
failing to force his way into Howard Wilkinson's first team
plans.
Jan 26 2003: Sevilla have signed Ajax's Nichos
Machlas on loan until the end of the season, with the option
of a permanent move if it goes well. The 29 year old Greek
is an ex-Golden Boot winner and has ended Sevilla's search
for a striker in the transfer window.
Jan 25 2003: Glenavon
have signed 3 new players in an attempt to rescue their
season. They are defender John Kennedy, signed from Ards,
former Leeds United attacking midfielder Sean Lavery and 27
year old midfielder Damien McParland.
Jan 25 2003: Leganes have agreed a loan deal with
Nacional for striker Pierre Webo. The Spanish Second
Division side will take Webo for 6 months at a cost of
£150,000 and then, if he performs well enough, they will
discuss a permanent move for him. Jan 25 2003:
Southampton have released Moroccan defender Tahar El-Khalej,
and they have told Kevin Davies
that his contract will not be renewed at the end of the
season.
El-Khalej is 34 and has won 99 caps for
Morocco but has failed to appear in the Saints first team
since September.
Davies
was once valued at £7m by Blackburn Rovers but after a
nightmare period there his form has vanished and he has been
unable to capture a first team place - even while out on
loan.
Jan 25 2003: Cafu's
contract with AS Roma ends at the end of the current season
and there was some speculation that he would join an English
Premiership side but he has opted to play in the Japanese
League for Yokohama Marinos. Cafu
will join them on July 1
2003 and the deal he has signed will keep him at Yokohama
until January 1 2006
Jan 24 2003: Manchester City have signed French
defender David Sommeil. The 28 year old has signed from
Bordeaux.
Jan 24 2003: Alloa Athletic have released Billy
Macdonald.
Jan 24 2003: Dumbarton have allowed 2 players to
go to non-league teams: Danny McKelvie and Kevin McCann.
At the same time the Sons have signed
Nigerian striker Ameka Obidie until the end of the season
after a successful trial period with the club.
Jan 24 2003: Brechin City have signed 31 year old
defender Paul Deas from Ross County and Dougie Coulston.
Jan 24 2003: Aberdeen have signed Livingston right
back Michael Hart.
Jan 24 2003: Rangers have French left back Jerome
Bonnisel at the club for talks. The 29 year old Bordeaux
full back is keen to join Rangers as soon as possible.
Jan 24 2003: Celtic have signed Livingston goalie
Javier Sanchez Broto until end of season. Jan 24 2003:
Dunfermline have allowed 31 year old striker Stewart Petrie
to join Northern Spirit (of Australia). Spirit have taken
over his contract which runs until the end of the season.
Jan 24 2003: Sunderland keeper, Michael
Ingham,
has joined York City on a months loan.
Jan 24 2003: Swansea have signed 33 year old
midfielder Lenny Johnrose on a non contract basis.
Jan 24 2003: Exeter City have completed the loan
signing of 31 year old centre half, Adrian Whitbread, from
Reading. With the Grecians being short of defenders and
Whitbread looking to regain match fitness after injury the
move suits both sides.
Jan 24 2003: Bury have signed Scottish striker
Colin Cramb on a 1 month deal. Bury have also announced that
striker Liam George will leave the club on the 2nd February
2003 when his contract expires.
Jan 24 2003: Stockport County have signed Swedish
keeper Ola Tidman until the end of the season. The 24 year
old has been released recently by his previous club and is
hopeful that he will be able to earn a long term deal.
Jan 24 2003: Northampton Town have signed Brent
Rahim on loan from Levski Sofia until the end of the season.
The Trinidad and Tobago international midfielder could be
joined at the Cobblers by Nigel Pierre who is discussing a
move to Sixfields.
Jan 24 2003: Liam Chilvers has completed his loan
move from Arsenal to Colchester United, he will be joined at
the U's by another new loan signing, Crystal Palace's 20
year old striker Gareth Williams.
Jan 24 2003: Peterborough have signed 31 year old
right back Ian Hendon on a non contract basis. He was
released by Sheffield Wednesday yesterday, after 3 years
with the club. Jan 24 2003: Tottenham
have beaten Sunderland in the race to sign Kazuyuki Toda.
The Japanese international, who starred in Japan's World Cup
side, has signed a 1 year loan deal from Shimizu S-Pulse.
Howard Wilkinson has expressed his disappointment after
hoping to sign Toda following his trial at the Black Cats.
Jan 24 2003: Ipswich have told Martijn Reuser and
Justin Miller that they are free to leave the club.
Martijn Reuser is one of the top
earners at the club and that is why he is being allowed to
leave. While Miller is unlikely to figure in the first team
and so is being released to find first team football.
Jan 24 2003: 22 year old midfielder Benjamin Gavon
has today completed his loan move to Nottingham Forest from
Olympique Marseille.
Jan 24 2003: Preston
North End have signed South African international striker,
George Koumantarakis, from FC Basel. The deal is until the
end of the season, with a view to a permanent move for an
undisclosed fee. The Greek born 28 year old has no need of a
work permit due to his dual Greek/South African nationality.
They have also allowed Finnish
international keeper Tepi Moilanen to join Hearts on a 4 month
loan deal.
Jan 24 2003: Abel Xavier is expected to complete a
1 year loan deal to Galatasaray. The deal would include an
option for a permanent move after the year is up.
Jan 24 2003: Birmingham City midfielder, Curtis
Woodhouse, has taken a pay cut to join Rotherham United for
the rest of the season. The 22 year old cost Birmingham £1
million
in February 2001 when he joined them from Sheffield United.
Jan 24 2003: Kidderminster Harriers have released
youngster, Scott Lower. Harriers would have liked to keep
him but feel that he isn't ready for the Nationwide League,
but they have no reserve team for him to play in to continue
his development.
Jan 23 2003: Raith
Rovers have signed keeper Ramiro Gonzalez as backup to first
choice Raul.
Jan 23 2003: Hull have re-signed keeper Alan
Fettis. Fettis who originally joined Hull back in August
1991 for £50,000, has returned to the club on a free from
York City.
Jan 23 2003: Cheltenham Town have given youth team
striker, Luke Beckett, promotion to the first team squad and
a contract until the end of the season.
Jan 23 2003: Norwich have handed academy defender,
19 year old Jason Shackell, a 2 year pro contract.
Jan 23 2003: Sheffield Wednesday have released
right back Ian Hendon.
Jan 23 2003: Bolton Wanderers have released 2 of
their Youth Academy graduates: midfielder Ciaran Ryan
and defender Wayne Buchanan.
Jan 22 2003: Torquay United have signed 20 year old right back, Kevin
Amankwaah, on loan from Bristol City for a month.
Jan 22 2003: Huddersfield Town director Geoff
Headey, has resigned after a dispute about on-field exploits
(or lack of them). 6 points from a possible 39 leaves Mr.
Headey feeling that it is time for a managerial change but
the rest of the board disagrees.
Jan 22 2003: Plymouth Argyle are awaiting
clearance for their French triallist, Alexandre Jeannin. The
Troyes player was sacked by Darlington in 2001 after being
seen out drinking in a Darlington nightclub within 48 hours
of a 7-1 defeat!
Jan 22 2003: Rams officials have admitted
the club is still in talks with Middlesbrough about a
potential deal for Malcolm
Christie and defender Chris Riggott but there's interest
in former England under-21 forward Christie from elsewhere
in the Premiership.
A senior Derby County official said
"We are still in touch with Middlesbrough about their
proposal but are encouraged by serious interest from other
quarters. We rejected an initial bid from Southampton for
Danny Higginbotham and, although there have been suggestions
of a revised bid for Danny, we have received no new offer
for him."
Jan 22 2003: Nottingham Forest are hoping to
complete the loan signing of Benjamin Gavon later today. The
22 year old Marseille midfielder impressed Paul Hart in 2
trials at the club.
Belgian international full back, Davy
Oyen has returned to Forest for another trial spell. He is
out of contract at Anderlecht in the Summer and can leave on
a free.
Meanwhile Motherwell have taken out of
favour Forest defender, Tony Vaughan, on trial. The
£350,000 buy from Manchester City has been told he can
leave on a free.
Jan 22 2003: Cheltenham Town have named former
Wales boss, Bobby Gould as their new manager. Jan 22 2003: Birmingham
City have completed the signing of Arsenal defender, Matthew
Upson. The 22 year old has signed a 3 and a half year deal
for a fee which could rise to £2.5 million. He signed for
Arsenal for £1 million from Luton Town in 1997, but he has
struggled to break into the Arsenal first team on a regular
basis, though he made enough appearances last season to win
a championship medal.
